Christmas 2013

Our first Christmas morning rule is that the kids cannot come downstairs until we go upstairs to get them.  The second rule is that we set the time that we go get them.  :-)  This year, we agreed that we would retrieve them at 7am and they were more than ready (though they were annoyed that I was slow taking pictures)!
Once they ran down the stairs, they came to the immediate conclusions that (1) Santa definitely came to Beaverbrook and (2) he didn't bring coal!  We plowed through Santa's gifts and all of our presents well before 8:30am.
The photo below shows how early our gift-opening took place, as it was still very dark outside.
After we finished with the gifts, Thomas cooked us all of his breakfast favorites (scrambled eggs, grits, bacon, sausage balls, toast) before we had a few hours to relish the peace after the post-Christmas morning craziness.

Mid-afternoon, it was time to head to the Carrolls for some additional Christmas celebrating.  The girls all received their American Girl dolls

while the boys played football outside in the crisp but sunny afternoon.
By the end of the afternoon, the girls had joined the boys' game.
After a Thanksgiving-like Christmas dinner with the extended Lee Family, it was time to head home as our Christmas 2013 drew to a close.

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve finally arrived!
Since we usually attend the 6:00 family service at church, our Christmas Eves of the past have been hectic.  This year, we decided to try something new by going out to a late lunch with Grandmommy and Granddaddy for our big Christmas Eve meal.  This plan freed up our evening and allowed us to enjoy some of our Christmas Eve traditions.  (I was excited to not have to cook as you could tell by the smile on my face before we left for the restaurant.)

This year, the boys chose to participate in the church's Christmas pageant, and they were both given the roles of shepherds.

Eleanor deemed herself "too old" this year so she watched the pageant from the pews for the first time in six years.

After we arrived home from church, it was time for the kids to open their one early present - Christmas pjs. (I love seeing our lit up tree in the front yard through the family room windows.)

They immediately changed into their new pajamas before Thomas read to them the story of Jesus's birth from the book of Luke and "Twas the Night Before Christmas".
Shortly after 9:00, we put the kids to bed as they were eager to get to sleep before they heard reindeer landing on the roof!

Dog Bed

Someone's happy we bought sweet Dixie a dog bed, though I'm not sure it is Dixie . . .

Three Straight Days of School Christmas Programs

The week before Christmas was the week of Christmas programs this year.  The week began with Ben's program on Wednesday morning, December 18th.  Ben's 5/6 class told the Christmas story at the final preschool chapel of the year.  Ben was selected to play the role of Joseph because, according to his teacher, he could sit still and wouldn't act silly.

Before the program officially began, unbeknownst to me, Ben's half birthday was celebrated along with the half birthdays of a good number of his classmates.
Here he is beside Evie, who played Mary,
and they both look weighed down by the burdens of the important roles they are about to play.

Once the program began, Joseph and Mary took their place at the manger
before the angels arrived to sing a few songs.
Then it was the shepherds' turn to tell their story before
the wise men arrived bearing gifts.
Once the program was over, Ben was relaxed enough to smile.
Here is the entire cast otherwise known as Ben's class.
After the program, Ben's class held their Christmas party in their classroom.  I stopped by for a quick hug and picture

before I moved on to get some last-minute Christmas shopping completed.

Early the next morning, it was Eleanor's turn with her school's Christmas program.  Eleanor and I had to be there at 7am (I was helping get the speakers dressed) so with Thomas in California, it made for an early morning for all of us! Ben and I spent the hour before the program's 8:15 start backstage assisting the female speakers with their robes and sashes.

The 5th grade of the Lower School, just like Ben's preschool class, told the story of the birth of Jesus.

Every child in the Lower School was present and positioned according to their grades.  Below, you can see the third grade to the upper left on the stage, the fifth grade in the center stage and the fourth grade to the right on the stage.  The pre-firsters are sitting off the stage in the middle (they are hard to see) with the first graders to their left and the second graders to their right.

Eleanor was one of ten fifth graders tasked with a speaking role.  She was the last speaker of the program

and she said, "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him. When they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts:  gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

On Friday morning, it was time for Hayes's "holiday" program.  His class joined half of the second grade, third and fourth grades and all of the fifth grade in the main campus's gym for the hour-plus performance.  When it was second grade's turn, Hayes and his peers

sang two songs in French, "Noel Jazz" and "Canon de Noel" and then ended with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" in English.
By the end of the third school program, we were ready for Christmas break to officially begin!

Favorite Christmas Songs

Each year I always enjoy polling the kids

to learn what they deem to be their favorite Christmas songs of the holiday season.  For some reason, I forgot to pose the question last year, but documented the kids' 2011 and 2010 votes here.

What are their "Favorite Christmas Song" selections for 2013?  Eleanor had trouble picking just one and likes both "Winter Wonderland" and "Sleigh Ride".  Hayes's vote this year was for "Jingle Bell Rock."  Ben chose a song that has not been selected by a kid yet in the history of our vote but one that is very catchy and youthful - "Run Run Rudolph".  I can't wait to see how their opinions change over the next year!

Homemade Advent Countdown

When we unpacked our Christmas items from their crates in late November, the kids discovered the Christmas tracing book they have enjoyed each holiday season.  All three kids immediately got busy drawing Christmas pictures.  At some point, when the quantity of pictures started to reach double-digits, they jointly came up with the idea of making their own advent calendar.  Each picture taped to the window sill in the playroom would represent a day remaining in advent.

As each day passed, Eleanor would move the pictures from the window sill to her door frame

as the kids counted down the days to December 25.

Christmas Wish Lists

The kids spent what felt like days working on their Christmas wish lists.  The lists seems extensive but we pull from these lists to share suggestions with grandparents and aunts/uncles. Here is Eleanor's wish list:

Ben's list consisted of the following:
Hayes literally changed his list daily.  He had so many different versions that we couldn't keep track of what he wanted on which day.  One afternoon in a fit of frustration with his siblings or mother, he crumpled them all up and threw them away . . . though I just found this one (taken mid-Jan because I've found it in a pile of papers).

More Gingerbread Decorating . . .

This past Saturday, the Watson Family hosted us for what has become a December tradition - gingerbread house decorating!  This crew of kids

spent over an hour decorating their individual houses before devouring Andrea's breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit, salad and cupcakes.  Because Ben and his buddy Andrew had already had one round of gingerbread-house-decorating at school, they worked like professionals while they watched the movie Elf on TV.

(I was surprised to see Hayes so focused on his decorating this year.)

In years past, he has been a bit of a disinterested attendee.  Eleanor always takes full advantage of this opportunity to showcase her artistic talents,
and she decorates her house until her time is up.  (This year, we had to leave early to head to Woodruff Arts Center to attend an ASO Christmas concert with the Morehouse Glee Club.)  All three kids were willing to pose with their finished houses

and E even let me take some quick friend pictures

before we were off to our next December event.   Thank you, Watsons, for another year of festive gingerbread-house-decorating!

Christmas is wearing us both out . . .

Last Friday, I was coming down with a cold.  Once Ben got home from school at 12:30, we ventured to Chick-fil-A for lunch so that I could get some chicken noodle soup and lemonade (both good for my sore throat).  We brought lunch home and ate it quickly before I told him that I was probably going to take a nap, that my energy was depleted, and my eyes were heavy.  I lay down on the living room sofa, set my alarm for when I would need to get up to collect E from school, and immediately fell asleep. About an hour later when my alarm went off, I woke up and went to check on Ben who had been watching Curious George in the family room.  Here is how I found him.

You can catch a glimpse of Dixie too at the foot of the sofa.  This sweet boy has not taken a nap since summer so I know he must have been exhausted.  That's what the month of December does to all of us!

Chat with Santa

Last Sunday after church, the kids had the opportunity to visit with Santa.  We met some of our Carroll cousins and family along with Collins Haber and her parents at lunch

and then made our way to sit with Santa. Thomas made sure he recorded the kids' requests for posterity's sake.

 Ben started off speaking.

He went so long that we had to remind him that Hayes

and Eleanor both needed to have their turns.
They each walked away pleased with their requests.  I just worry that their lists were so long that they can't even remember which items they mentioned.

We can't wait to see what Santa brings on Christmas morning!
